Muslims and "Fitna" - an Appeal from Al Arabiya News Channel

Al Arabiya News Channel posted "A Letter to Muslims: DON'T REACT" Al Arabiya News Channel, English version (March 23, 2008).

The salutation and first paragraph: "Dear All Muslims,

"A new controversial anti-Islam movie by far-right Dutch politician Geert Wilders is set to be released sometime next month. The movie is about ten minutes long, will probably be highly offensive and may say things about you that are going to hurt. But I beg you, DON’T REACT."

It's signed, "A Muslim"

The writer appears to be Mona Moussly, a British Muslim.

The open letter makes a point which seems to be lost on supporters of Al Qaeda and similar organizations: "Riots, flag burning, death threats, killing, anger, hate, are all AGAINST the core principles of Islam and will also prove Wilders' point that the Quran is a fascist book and should be banned."

I'd be more impressed, if I could read Arabic, and see what the 'real' Al Arabiya says. It a situation like this, it's not unreasonable to suspect that there's one message for the foreigners, and another for local consumption.

However, Mona Moussly's message is a welcome breath of enlightened self-interest coming from the Islamic world.
From the other side of the Atlantic, there's "Wilders Movie Website, Network Solutions, Is Caving Into Radical Islam" Muslims against Sharia (March 24, 2008). An excerpt from the post raises a concern that I share: "However, we find it disturbing that Network Solution suspended "Fitna" website while hosting a multitude of radical Islamic websites, some of which belong to (or are closely affiliated with) terrorist groups."

Behold the multitudes of crawling and cowering Dhimmis. It would be funny if there was no film after all, if it was just a stunt to get everybody talking.

All freedom starts with freedom of speech. If there is no freedom of speech, there will be no freedom. The Christians and Jews don't riot when somebody makes fun of Christ or Jews. People must learn to be civilized. Rioting MUST not be tolerated.

That'll be great if there's no rioting, how very mature that would be. Geert Wilders is a hero telling the painful truth. Definitely show it in Denmark ASAP.
absurd thought -
God of the Universe says
let yourself be bullied

never shoot rioting thugs
let them threaten you at will

absurd thought -
God of the Universe says
appease religious wackos

even those like Nazis
NEVER point out their faults

I see you've got a template. For efficiency's sake, I'll follow suit.

Agreed. If you take the very best of one group, and the very worst from another, the first group will look nice, and the second won't.

I try not to do that.

Note! Although I believe that these websites and blogs are useful resources for understanding the War on Terror, I do not necessarily agree with their opinions. 1 1 Given a recent misunderstanding of the phrase "useful resources," a clarification: I do not limit my reading to resources which support my views, or even to those which appear to be accurate. Reading opinions contrary to what I believed has been very useful at times: sometimes verifying my previous assumptions, sometimes encouraging me to change them.

Even resources which, in my opinion, are simply inaccurate are sometimes useful: these can give valuable insights into why some people or groups believe what they do.

In short, It is my opinion that some of the resources in this blogroll are neither accurate, nor unbiased. I do, however, believe that they are useful in understanding the War on Terror, the many versions of Islam, terrorism, and related topics.
