Okay - what about women and Islam? Adultery should be punished by stoning or lashing. That's perfectly okay, the imam said: After all, he went on, Jesus said "let him who is without sin cast the first stone." (I know: but that's what the imam said.)

Remember - November 1979, gunmen in Mecca stormed the stone that's Islam's holiest shrine. They were dislodged, but the Saudi government had made a deal with the Wahhabi leaders, agreeing to finance their projects, as long as they did their work outside Saudi Arabia.

That's when a boom of mosque-building started, worldwide.
