Pakistan: What a Mess

Bhutto's back under house arrest. She wanted to lead a protest march, the Pakistani president didn't want her to.

Meanwhile, President Pervez Musharraf of Pakistan says that he'll let elections happen in January of 2008. His state of emergency will extend until the election. He says that he needs to keep a lid on anti-his-administration protests and demonstrations, to assure that the election is done properly.

I wish I was convinced that President Musharraf had only Pakistan's best interests in mind.

  1. I am not convinced about Musharraf either.

Washington’s policy of relying on a military dictator to defeat terrorism has not produced the intended result. Only recently, the U.S. had counted on a deal between Benazir Bhutto and Musharraf to ensure political stability and strong ties with the West.

But Musharraf's recklessness, his determination to hang on to power, has made such deal impossible and he is showing no sign of moderating his position.

    A mess it remains...

  2. You'd think this country would have learned a lesson from all those banana republic generalissimos back in the 20th century.

On the other hand, there are parts of the world with precious little in terms of leadership material, except tinhorn dictators with aspirations to brass.
